Amazing
Unbelievable. Y´all should be here to see how my country and city are all yellow and green. Everywhere you go, every corner you´re on there´s a Brazilian flag or something alike. I´ve never seen my country so united on one very same goal. The GOAL! My people have never shown me so much patriotism as I´ve been seeing since the beginning of the World Soccer Cup.
I wish we were that patriot all the way - not only at the Games. 30 minutes before the game started this morning (Brazil x Ghana) I could see many dressed in yellow and green. I am telling you ... lots of people. Cars with small flags, huge flags on top of buildings, bars full of the same colors, hats, caps, polished nails, t-shirts, shirts, faces, glasses, shorts, motorcycles, kids, adults, teens, everyone speaking the same language today. I wish we understood each other so well every single day of my Brazilian life.
I must confess it´s wonderful to see everybody cheering for our team in Germany. Everybody so in love with the colors of our flag. Everybody smiling, suffering and celebrating together. You, foreigners, must come and check it out for yourselves. It´s unique. If you intend to come and live here, come in a Soccer Cup year. Brazilians do love soccer. I don´t. Except at the Cup.
The city is stuck. No one on streets. No one wandering off. Thousands of televisions on. Lots of bottles of beer on the tables. No exaggeration. I mean it. Most businesses are closed now. Banks opened earlier so they could close earlier, as well. Schools are not teaching. Students are not studying, either. It´s World Soccer Cup. We seem to have no problem. Poverty, social problems, our many corrupted politicians, they all seem not to exist any longer. Of course, robbers, muggers, drug dealers, politicians, the rich, the poor, white, black, hetero, homo, bi, dumb, intelligent, hard workers, tramps, beautiful, ugly, tall, short, curly haired, straight haired, catholics, adventists, protestants, atheists, myself, our maid, my friends, my enemies, well-educated, illerate, prostitutes, virgins, .. everyone is focused on one thing only. The game.
Go for it, Brazil. Soccer is a religion in Brazil. I mean it again.
Also, I keep wishing we were that patriot every single Brazilian day.
